Veteran NBC News reporter Andrea Mitchell announced Tuesday that she will be leaving her MSNBC daytime show at the start of the new year.
The 77-year-old will leave behind the anchor desk, a spot she’s occupied since 2008, to take on a “broader role” at NBC News.
Mitchell told viewers of her decision to leave Andrea Mitchell Reports after 16 years on-air during Tuesday’s broadcast.
“And after 16 years of being in the anchor chair every day, I want time to do more of what I love the most,” she said at the end of her program. “More connecting, listening and reporting in the field, especially as whoever is elected next week is going to undertake the monumental task of handling two foreign wars and the political divisions here at home.”
Mitchell, who has reported on every presidential campaign for NBC News since 1980, revealed she would be stepping down as anchor in January 2025, after the presidential inauguration.
She will remain with the news division as chief Washington correspondent and chief foreign affairs correspondent reporting for the broadcast network, MSNBC, and the network’s streaming channel NBC News Now.
“So come next year, you’ll still see me in your living rooms, on your mobile devices and on other platforms and perhaps also in your hometowns and cities, still asking the questions to get the answers you deserve.”
Recently, viewers have not been in favor of Mitchell’s coverage of Washington, so messages of support as she embarks on a new journey were few and far between.
“DING DONG the witch is dead. Andrea Mitchell is leaving her noontime show in January!!! The country is healing,” someone wrote on X.
“Andrea Mitchell is retiring. At last!” another person tweeted.
“Andrea Mitchell will be stepping down from a daily show!!!!!!! After Inauguration, but still. God does listen!!” a user added.
